Torera

“Torera” is a masterful work by Compañía Flamenca Antonio Andrade that delves into the tensions, emotions and challenges of women in the bullfighting world. Premiered in 2017 at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, as part of the VI Bienal de Flamenco, this production starring Málaga-born bailaora Úrsula Moreno offers a bold and moving interpretation of the relationship between the Torera and the Torero, exploring the inner duality and the struggle to find the deepest strength of the soul.

The stage is transformed into a bullring, where a narrative unfolds in two powerfully contrasting acts. The first part, luminous and vibrant, reflects the dynamism and search, while the second part delves into a darker, almost Picasso-like atmosphere, evoking a journey into the depths of the self. In this journey, the Bull emerges as a transcendental symbol, a representation of the inner strength that the Torera seeks and faces with courage.

The work combines tradition and modernity through an enveloping scenography and the use of projections that intensify each moment. The play of lights, abstract images and contemporary elements merge with the classic flamenco aesthetics, creating a visually stunning show. The music, composed exclusively for this production, accompanies with an emotional force that elevates each scene, making the spectator vibrate.

With a cast of 20 artists on stage, “Torera” is the result of more than a year of work dedicated to perfecting every detail. The work consolidates Compañía Flamenca Antonio Andrade as a benchmark of contemporary flamenco, offering an experience that not only celebrates the Andalusian tradition, but also reinterprets it with unique depth and creativity.
